a whirlwind trip

When I tell you how many things we crammed into our two-day getaway to the U.P., you will think we are crazy, but we did it. We left early Saturday morning for a 5-hour drive to the Upper Peninsula. We arrived at Mackinaw City around lunchtime, so we stopped at the park there, had a picnic lunch and took some pictures by the bridge.

After lunch, we drove across the bridge. This was the kids first time there. We went to our hotel to check in, but we were there too early, so we went on our way north. Of course, we had to stop at Castle Rock just north of St. Ignace. We climbed to the top and thought we might have heart attacks on the way up. It’s pretty steep and there are a ton of stairs to climb. But the view was lovely and it was worth the climb.

We drove northward to Whitefish Point, took a look at the lighthouse and buildings, ventured out to the beach to see Lake Superior, and picked up some rocks.

Then it was south toward Paradise and a visit to Tahquamenon Falls. The falls are always so cool to see. We went to the lower falls first, walked the boardwalk to get a closer look, and took some pictures. The wind was so nice there and it was blowing mist from the waterfall in our faces, which felt nice since it was such a warm day.

We got some ice cream and the kids played checkers before we headed over to the upper falls.

Every time I’ve been to the upper falls with Jen, the river has been pretty low. One year, it was so shallow that the falls were split and dry in the middle and people climbed out on top of them. But this time, the river was flowing fast and deep and I got to see them in all their glory.

After a beautiful fall day, we spent the evening at our hotel swimming in the pool. I fell asleep almost the second my head hit the pillow. It was a ton of driving in one day.

Day two would be filled with even more driving than the day before. We stopped at Java Joe’s for morning coffee and Joe asked where we were going and after informing him we were headed to Kitch-iti-kipi, he suggested when we were done there, we should head a little further west and south on the Garden Peninsula to Fayette State Park to the ghost town. And that’s exactly what we did!

We went to Kitch-iti-kipi first. The kids really liked it there. I knew they would. I’m so glad Jen and I discovered it this summer. Chloe even got to make the raft move across the spring. It’s so cool there. It stays at a constant 45 degrees, so it never freezes over. I can just imagine how awesome it would be in the winter.

Then it was off to Fayette. I think this was my favorite place of the weekend. I love every place we went, but there’s just something about walking in a deserted town, where people used to work and live, seeing where they lived and the beauty of the location of this old iron town with the cliffs and water surrounding it. It was the coolest place. Very peaceful, too. With the fall colors, it just felt like the perfect time of year to visit there. Thanks, Java Joe! We loved it!

We headed home in the late afternoon and drove two hours back to St. Ignace then another five hours home. It was a crazy amount of driving and a thousand miles added to the odometer, but completely worth it.

I love the U.P. and I’m so thankful that mom took us on this trip and let me share some of my favorite places with my family.

two weeks past

my birthday cake. mom put my name and age on it. the kids decorated the corners w/the heart, xoxo, smiley face and mom. love it.

the past 2 weeks:
- Lots of swimming in our Big Blue pool
- A little stressed out by the kids
- Jake suggested we get a couple days to ourselves. MomO agreed to take the kids for a couple overnights and he took two days off work.
- My 38th birthday. Had a pizza party here w/my parents and brothers.
- Dropped the kids off after the party and went to a movie. Super 8. Fun summer movie.
- Spent a day in Canton. Lunch at Panera. Shopping at IKEA. Got the bookshelf I’ve been wanting for years. Happy Birthday to me!
- Spent a day in GR. Browsed Barnes & Noble. We each picked out a book and we got a book for each of the kids, too. I got a book about Jane Austen that has a collection of the letters she wrote during her life. Fascinating.
- Lunch at Olive Garden.
- Made BBQ pulled pork in the crockpot for the first time. Turned out GREAT. So delicious.
- Watched the movie “Aquamarine” with Chloe about fifteen times. She pretends to be a mermaid in the pool now. :)
- So impressed that the kids are using their evening quiet time (the hour before bedtime) to read their new books. Even Zach, who doesn’t normally choose reading first if he has other more entertaining options (games, legos, etc.).
- Used my straightening iron on Chloe’s hair. She looked so pretty with her hair all smoothed out. It’s normally a crazy wavy flyaway mess.

- Went to Dad O’s work retirement dinner at Seasonal Grille here in town. First time eating there. Very nice place with yummy food.
- Jake ran out of gas on his way to work on Wednesday. oops!
- Talked to my dear friend Jen and made the final plans for our annual camping trip next weekend. Can’t wait!
- Some big storms this week with tons of rain. Our Big Blue pool is so full right now, must drain some water today so we can swim this weekend.
- Chloe slept in our bed on Wed. night (because of the storms).
- Chloe slept in her own bed last night. She said she prayed that God would “keep it down” ’cause she was trying to sleep. So proud she made it through the whole night.
- Jake accidentally left his phone at home yesterday. oops again! Gave us an excuse to deliver it and have lunch with him.
- Did some more research on my Grandpa’s time in WWII – 334th Infantry 84th Division G Company. From October 10, 1944 to Dec 31, 1944, he was involved in quite a bit of combat. I was lucky enough to find a breakdown of what the 334th did during that time. Lots more reading and investigating to do. I’ve only scratched the surface. Very thankful for the pictures, letters and info we have so far.
- Had a challenging day with the kids yesterday. Just one of those days, I guess.
- Enjoyed a large mocha frappe after a long frustrating day with the kids.

Can’t believe July is nearly over. Only 5 more weeks until school starts. Trying not to think about it. Need to pack some good fun into August!

happy independence day

Jake and I recently watched the HBO series “John Adams” and we loved it. We highly recommend it. I thought I would share this clip from the series of the voting and reading of the Declaration of Independence.

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE from the series “John Adams”:

So proud to be an American!!! Happy 4th! “God save our American states!” :)

the first thanksgiving

Added some new images to the slideshow banner at the top of the page. It had been the same for at least a year, so I chose some recent pics of all of us. This is one of the slides. I like this pic of me and Jake, even though I cut half his head off when I took it.

Had a fun weekend. Mom took the kids on Saturday morning while Jake and I went to see New Moon. LOVED it. It’s so much fun to see these characters that I love so much from the books come to life. Can’t wait for Eclipse to come out this summer.

Went to a birthday party and then over to Jake’s parents’ that night to watch “Up”.

On Sunday, we spent the day at my parents for an early Thanksgiving dinner. My mom and I started a week ago cutting all sugar from our diet, so we had to resist the urge to eat some pumpkin pie and cookies, but we did it. We’re doing really well and sticking with it this time.

As we sat down to dinner, my dad talked with us and the kids about who the pilgrims were and the reasons they came to America – to escape religious persecution and have the freedom to worship God the way they wanted to. He also shared some Bible verses that the pastor at church had shared earlier that morning that he said supposedly were favorite verses among the pilgrims as they made their journey.

Psalm 107:21-31
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.
Let them sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy.
Others went out on the sea in ships; they were merchants on the mighty waters.
They saw the works of the LORD, his wonderful deeds in the deep.
For he spoke and stirred up a tempest that lifted high the waves.
They mounted up to the heavens and went down to the depths; in their peril their courage melted away.
They reeled and staggered like drunken men; they were at their wits’ end.
Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and he brought them out of their distress.
He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.
They were glad when it grew calm, and he guided them to their desired haven.
Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men.

I did a little reading about the first Thanksgiving on wikipedia this morning. Of the 102 passengers who were on board the Mayflower, 45 died the first winter. Only 4 women were left alive for the first Thanksgiving. It’s crazy when you really think about all that those people had to go through to establish this country we live in today, with all our freedoms and privileges that we so often take for granted. I told my mom today that I tend to think of Thanksgiving as the holiday before Christmas. I’ve never really taken the time to think about what it truly means. Those people were thankful to God for their very lives, that they made it through the winter when so many of their family and friends did not. All so they could be free to worship God as they wanted to and not the way the government told them to.

I am thankful for so many things: God, my husband and children, my family, good friends, health, a roof over our heads, food on our table, and also for the friends I’ve made through this blog. Have a blessed Thanksgiving!
