our march

What a crazy month of March. I feel like it kind of went by in a blur.

At the beginning of the month, I decided to teach the kids how to play the piano. I took my first lessons in second grade and have played every since, even studying music at college. I tried teaching Chloe a couple years ago, but she just wasn’t at the point where she would listen to her mom as her teacher. I thought maybe having someone else teach them might be an option, but we can’t afford that. But while browsing the internet for info, I came across some free lessons online and thought I would use those videos along with a beginner book I bought Chloe a few years ago. The videos are geared toward younger kids, which seem OK for Chloe, but a little young for Zach. He follows along with them for me anyway, just to kind of see what his sister is learning and it helps reinforce the basics for him. I was happily surprised that both kids have done pretty well with me teaching them. Now that we are in the routine of it, they know what to expect and are doing better at listening to my instruction and not fidgeting and goofing around on the piano before I ask them to play something. So, it’s going well, and I hope to put on a little recital for the grandparents in a few months. :)

Also at the beginning of the month, I took a drive to Coldwater to visit Lindsey & Kevin and sweet little Avery. Oh my goodness, he is so tiny and precious. I spent a couple hours there visiting and holding him and taking lots of pictures for them. So many sweet ones. Here is a favorite that I came across while editing yesterday. Love this one so much. Makes me smile. So happy for them. They are such a cute little family.

Spent some quality time with my girl. The kids had no school one Friday, so Chloe and I went to GR, shopped, had lunch, got some Starbucks. It was a wonderful time together. We need to do that more often. :)

Mom and I went to Holland for a nice get-together with the ladies of the Young family (well, most of them). Got to meet Chris & Rhonda’s sweet little Sophie for the first time and visit with these wonderful women who are so special to us. They were always like my other family growing up and I love them very much!

We had plenty of gorgeous weather for walking and bike riding. It was the warmest month for our area as we had a week or so in there of 80+ degree weather, which was absolutely glorious, and it broke all kinds of records with all time high temperatures. Chloe got to ride her new birthday bike lots. It felt so awesome to wear t-shirts and capris and flip flops. We were hoping it would stick around a little longer, but it’s been cooler bringing in April. Back to the usual average temps. It was really nice while it lasted, though. Now that the weather is cooler again, we are all longing for the warmth of summer.

April has arrived now and we are starting off our month with Spring Break. No big plans this year since we took our big trip to Florida in December and we’re planning a trip out west for sometime this summer. So we’re hanging around here, taking it easy, enjoying the break from our normal routine. Soccer has begun, so there are lots of practices and games will be starting soon. I love that there are only a couple more months until summer break, though. Whenever we hit Spring Break, it’s like the home stretch. I know I should probably not be looking forward to the kids being done with another year of school and moving on to the next grade, but I think we are all ready for those lazy days of summer to get here. :)

our february

Well, this month has just flown by without a moment left for my blog. ;) A baby shower, Chloe’s 9th birthday (last year in the single digits. boohoo!), a Valentines party at school for Chloe, a date with my hubby to IKEA, Lindsey’s baby arriving three weeks early (yikes!), a visit with my dear friend Jen and a daddy/daughter masquerade ball. It’s been a nice month, not a lot of snow, lots of family time, and a little too much eating out, but it’s helping the winter months to move along. Looking forward to Spring’s arrival, that’s for sure.

The highlight of my month was getting to be there for the birth of sweet little Avery Tanner Gerlinger. Such a tiny little thing, being a few weeks early. It is such a miracle to see a baby born and I feel so overwhelmingly blessed that Kevin and Lindsey trusted me to be with them and photograph it all.

I get to go visit soon and take some newborn pictures, so I’m very excited about that. He’s so adorable. :)

baby belly in a barn

This past weekend, Lindsey and Kevin were in town for her baby shower and we took some maternity pictures out at my parents farm. Maternity pictures among the hay bales. Who’d a thunk it? ;) But they turned out really cute. It’s been fun to use my parents barns for pictures over the past couple years. I actually really like the old peeling green paint on the barn, but they are replacing it with traditional red siding, so soon the green will be a thing of the past. Gotta take advantage of it while I still can, right? One of my favorites of Lindsey (on the left) with her cute little baby belly and the happy couple looking so sweet together, as always. It was fun (stinkin’ cold, but fun)!

A few years ago, we took this picture at Tunnel Park in Holland (left), our little nod to the movie “Notting Hill” and the scene where Julia Roberts is laying on Hugh Grant’s lap on the bench, all cute and pregnant. Only Lindsey wasn’t pregnant at the time and we talked about recreating it again in like 10 years when they had their first baby. Well, it hasn’t been that many years, but we couldn’t end the maternity pictures without finding a bench.

In about a month or so, I will be getting a call from them and I will drive like a mad woman to get to the hospital so I can capture the moment their sweet little boy enters the world. I am so overjoyed that they asked me to be a part of it.

welcome to october

Happy October!

Well, it seems this has turned into a once a week blog. There’s been a lot of the above going on lately. Our life right now is soccer five days a week. We enjoy it, but I will be very ready when the end of the month arrives and games are over until next Spring.

- Chloe is now showing an interest in taking some dance classes, so that might be the next thing we get involved in. Also, thinking about signing her up for some piano lessons. She won’t listen when mom tries to teach her. ;)

- Jake went to Austin, TX the week before last for a business trip. He really enjoyed it and got to visit the Capitol building and eat at some great restaurants and see the millions of bats that fly out at dusk each night from under a bridge downtown (creepy!).

- We went to my high school’s homecoming game this year. I haven’t been back for a game since I graduated 20 years ago (yes, that’s right. 20!). It was fun to be there again and see familiar faces and root our team on. They didn’t win (boohoo!), but it was a fun time anyway. My brother Rick came along and we reminisced about our high school days.

- I got to hang out with my childhood BFF, Karleen, on Friday. Her daughter was on the homecoming court for Hastings and I tagged along to the homecoming assembly and took a bunch of pictures of her being announced on the court and performing a routine with the cheerleading squad. It was a lot of fun.

- Too much sad news the past two weeks. A couple of my friends had family members involved in serious car accidents. My heart just ached so much for them as they said goodbye to a sister and a father-in-law. If you would, please pray for the Miller family and the Haidle family.

- Jake’s dad went to the hospital last week with some pain in his lungs and trouble breathing. They found some blood clots in the lungs and one in his leg. Please pray for healing for him. He stayed there for several days and was put on blood thinners, and now he is home. We’re praying the clots go away and never come back.

- Spent our Sunday morning at the fairgrounds for TVC’s (Thornapple Valley Church) Celebration service. TVC has three services in Hastings and two in Middleville. All the services combined for one big service in the grandstand. It was a lot of fun having everyone together, praising God outside while the early morning sun warmed our faces (our toes were another story since it was like 40 degrees out), we sang choruses, and a few horses at a farm next door pranced across the field. It was a beautiful sight. Afterwards, there were all sorts of fun things for the families to do: lunch (pulled pork served in the swine barn. hahaha!), inflatable bounce houses and slides, face painting, hay rides, and lots of snacks. It was a fun time.

- Went to my parents farm in the afternoon. The guys all worked to help Dad get one of the barns prepped to become a garage. Mom made a delicious roast and some pies for dessert. It was a very nice day!

- The trees are starting to change color here now. There are little pops of color here and there. I LOVE fall.

- I’m still keeping up with our weekly Project Life photo album. I have a text file on my computer desktop that I open at the end of each day and type out a brief summary of what we did that day. It’s really helping me when it comes to writing in the album and it’s also become a little mini journal. It’s fun to read back through some of our days from earlier in the year, and it’s such a quick and easy thing to do. I literally spend five to ten minutes on it each day, just enough time to type the events of the day and anything else I want to remember to record in the album.

- With this colder weather arriving, I’m feeling the urge to knit again. Time to pull out those needles and decide what to make.

self portraits and stuff

taken in July 2011 by Chloe using the Xoom tablet

These pictures are such gems. Chloe was just playing around, taking video and pictures of herself. There were thousands of pics over the course of a couple months. It was craziness. I guess she gets her picture takin’ love from her mama.

My blog’s a little quiet lately, huh? Still adjusting to the school schedule. Some days I come home and I’m just done. No energy for anything. Hope that changes as the weeks go on. Mom and I are back to our daily walking. Yay! We’re up to about 2.5 miles now and that is helping for sure.

I finally jumped on the bandwagon and joined Pinterest this week. It’s definitely a wonderful site for all kinds of inspiration for home, crafts, recipes, style, etc. The list goes on and on. I’m enjoying it and still kind of getting used to how it works. As the colder months are approaching, Pinterest is giving me all kinds of urges to knit and embroider and scrapbook. Getting the creative juices flowing is always a good thing.

The kids are both doing great in school so far. Zach has adjusted well to middle school and only went to the wrong class once the first week. :) His biggest struggle was the dial on his locker not turning smoothly. It sticks sometimes causing him to accidentally turn past the correct numbers. It’s given him all kinds of grief, but he told me the other day that he’s mastered it now. Chloe loves her new class and has a new BFF named … Chloe. It’s so cute. I’ve been calling them “The Chloes”. She said they are constantly talking about all the things they have in common, like “the fact that our moms both named us Chloe.” :D

We had a really nice weekend and officially ended summer with a cookout at our friends Ron & Jen’s place last night.
Hope you all had a wonderful weekend.

a day in august | at the zoo

Chloe and Ashley | John Ball Zoo 8.15.11 – Zach decided to sneak into the picture and do his little “cheeky face”. Such a silly kid.

Last Monday was zoo day for us. We headed out with my mom and Chloe’s friend, Ashley, for a fun afternoon together. We had a little lunch first and then explored the zoo. Ashley was our brave girl and went on the zip line. Chloe was dying to go, but she was so disappointed because she was about 7 lbs. too light. She’s such a skinny minny.

The girls had to cover their faces from the smell of the flamingos. And here’s Zach’s “cheeky face” again in this pic of the kids enjoying their icee drinks.

Chloe loved all the animals (and fish). She and Ashley spent quite a bit of time in the petting zoo. They also got to pet a wallaby.

Another wonderful summer day!

camping 2011 | day two and three

love this picture of Jen looking for rocks on the beach in Manistique

On Saturday, we headed over to the Manistique area to visit Kitch-iti-kipi (aka Big Spring). It is a huge fresh water spring that stays at a constant 45〫all year round. The blue/green color was amazing. The water is totally clear and the algae and minerals make the beautiful colors. We boarded the little self-propelled raft and slowly moved out over the spring. The raft has an open area in the middle for people to see the bottom. It was awesome to see the water bubbling up from the ground. Kind of mesmerizing. The bottom of the spring is constantly changing from the sand shifting. It looked like moon craters down there in some places. Totally worth driving two hours from St. Ignace. I think it would be really cool to go there in the winter with the snow all around and see what it’s like.

After the raft returned to the dock, we went and had a little picnic lunch and then checked out the gift shop there before heading back.

We stopped at the lighthouse in Manistique and while Jen went exploring on the beach (she found some cool driftwood), I walked down the boardwalk and took some pictures. It was a beautiful day for a walk.

When we reached the Cut River Bridge, we stopped to check it out. I loved the cool arches and walkway under the bridge. Great place for pictures.

About 15-20 minutes outside of St Ignace, we stopped along the road by this long stretch of beach that was just perfect for swimming. We hung out there for a little bit and then headed back to camp. That night we had pizza hobo pies over the fire, then hung out and roasted marshmallows and sat by the fire talking until it burned down.

It rained in the morning, so I didn’t take any pictures because most of our time was spent drying things off and packing up. We did sit by one last morning campfire and talk and sip coffee (tea in Jen’s case) and Jen read some verses out of Proverbs. Our own little Sunday camp church. :D

This was our 7th trip together. We figured out that our first trip to St. Ignace was back in 2005. We kept trying to find things that tied in with the number 7. Like, our trip ended on August 7th and we looked up the verse that reads “A friend loves at all times”, which is Proverbs 17:17. haha! Yes, we were grasping, but it did have 7′s in it.

It was a very happy 7th trip! Can’t wait for the 8th!

camping 2011 | day one

My camping trip with Jen last weekend was just what I needed. We had a great time together, as usual, and took some time to just relax, too, which was perfect.

We camped in the U.P. (Upper Peninsula of Michigan for those who don’t know) at Straits State Park, which is just to the east after you cross the bridge. And THIS was our view of the Mackinac Bridge. Not too shabby. Way to go, Jen, for getting us such a cool campsite.

Once we got campfire wood and our tent and site all set up …

… we sat and relaxed under this big beautiful tree.

It’s sort of become our tradition to cook teriyaki marinated chicken and little tin foil packs of veggies over the fire on our first night of camp. Here’s my veggies before and after. Nothing beats food cooked over an open fire.

We relaxed all evening by our fire. I ate like half a bag of marshmallows – nice and toasted. yum! I took some crazy video of our campfire antics. I may share a video or two here, but I’m not promising anything. ;)

The bridge looked so cool as the sun went down. I took a bazillion pictures of it, but I really liked this one taken at night. Not too bad for not having a tripod with me.

For some reason, whenever we’re camping, I wake up around 6 a.m. Don’t know why. I just usually can’t sleep in. On this particular morning, The sound of birds squawking at each other was my alarm clock. Totally annoying. But I was able to enjoy the nice morning light and take a few pictures.

Good morning, St Ignace!

Good morning, Mackinac Bridge!

On Day Two, we headed to Manistique. Those pictures are up next. This would actually be the better day to share video of because we got to see one of the coolest little natural wonders in Michigan.

Happy Friday everyone!

calgon, take me away

this picture has nothing really to do with the below post. I just found it while working on my 2010 year in review book. Taken last fall out at the farm.

If you are a friend of mine on Facebook, you no doubt saw my status recently about our leaky roof, clogged kitchen sink, broken dryer, flooded basement, leaky water heater, etc. I also was in need of new tires on my car. I’ve replaced tires along the way as they’ve gone bad (or flat) just due to the needs of the moment and lack of funds to replace them all. Four different brands of tires at varying levels of wear. A couple weeks ago, when Jake and I had a couple days to ourselves (thanks to our wonderful mothers), we drove all the way over to Canton (2 hrs.) and back. Lately, whenever I hit 70mph on the highway, my steering wheel just shakes like crazy. We discussed it possibly being something with the steering or alignment or something. Well, we discovered the problem the next day after driving all that distance. Went to lunch at Olive Garden and the way that I turned into the parking space left my front driver side tire turned in a bit. When I went to get in the car after lunch, I just happened to glance at the tire and I was horrified. Jake said it was a ply separation. We could see threads and it just looked like my tire was coming apart at the seams. I thanked God at that moment that we went such a distance (my mom and I also went to Auburn Hills for the 4th of July, too) without the tire blowing out while driving on the highway.

So a couple of our problems have been fixed.

- New tires were purchased yesterday. A few hundred dollars later and I now have four matching tires and a big sigh of relief. Especially since I am driving five hours north tomorrow with my wonderful friend Jen for our annual girls camping trip!

- The clogged kitchen sink was fixed by my wonderful husband. I thought I would be helpful while Jake was at work, so I boiled a pot of water hoping it would push whatever was stuck down the drain. Well, it didn’t work and the sink just filled up on both sides with the boiling water. What it did do was cause the pipe under the left side of the sink to detach from the sink causing all the water to cover everything under the sink and flood my kitchen floor. That was fun. So much for trying to be helpful. But Jake got in there and figured it out and fixed the pipe and all is well again.

I am in dire need of this camping trip with Jen. So many little things have been getting to me and I feel like even though I’ve gotten some little breaks this summer, I haven’t really had much quiet time to just let my brain rest. I need that. And I need some time to think about what I need right now.

I’ve felt a little lost this year. Happy that I chose to focus more on the kids and my family, but a little sad to let my business go. Not regretful, though, because I knew for a long time that I was done with that part of my life. Every now and then I see a beautiful wedding online and it reminds me of all the days I shared with so many couples, but then I remember how miserable my body felt for days following a wedding and how much of my family life I gave up to edit all those pictures. Then I smile knowing that I made the right choice.

Jake tells me I need to be working on my novel. The last time I took part in NaNoWriMo, I wrote a story about a girl’s journey to faith. Jake read it earlier this year on the plane home from New York and when he got in the car he punched me in the arm and said “Thanks a lot” for making him cry on the plane in front of strangers. :D He thinks it’s a really good story, but it needs a whole lot of work. I hope he will help me through the process. Just have to resolve to sit down and finish it.

Still trying to figure out what God wants me to be doing. Going to spend some quiet time this weekend talking to Him about it. Hoping to come home with a little clarity.

Camping with Jen is always a good time. This year I’m bringing Jake’s Flipcam along. Who knows, maybe I will share a video or two of our adventure. :)

Have a wonderful weekend!

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord. “Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
Jeremiah 29:11
(a favorite verse of mine)

a list on monday

• Going through pictures from Scarlett’s bday party and found this one of Chloe. Played with a bunch of textures using Photoshop and got a few fun versions. I think I like the one on the lower right the best.

• Went to an anniversary party on Saturday for Laurel & Steve, my neighbors growing up. It was nice to see them and their daughters, April and Holly. We had a good time reminiscing about the good ol’ days.

• Did something to my back this weekend. Not sure what, but I am in a lot of pain. My lower back is extremely stiff and sore. Hurts to sit for long periods of time and when I do sit and then try to get up … it makes me wants to cry. Hope it gets better quickly.

• Watched “Facing the Giants” yesterday. A little family time! That movie is so wonderful.

• Lots of storms this morning, so we’re having a quiet day indoors watching TV, knitting, playing on the computer. Chloe and I sat on our front porch for a while watching the storms. She read some books and I knitted her a headband. It was nice.

• Hoping for some nice sunshine this week so we can spend some time in our beloved “Big Blue” pool.

Happy Monday everyone!
