April Project Life® Blog Hop

Welcome to the fourth of 12 BLOG HOPS from the 2014 Becky Higgins Project Life® Creative Team! We are all passionate about Project Life & memory keeping and we wanted to continue to inspire each other and you as we move forward in 2015.

Because I’ve been busy putting the finishing touches on MY NOVEL over the past month, I didn’t have a lot of extra time to work on my physical Project Life album, but I really wanted to go back and put together some layouts from my annual camping trips with my friend Jen. Most of the time, I use Photoshop to design my layouts and then print the photos for the pocket pages. This time, I knew the Project Life App would help me create more pages and get through the photos faster. So, I went through my folders of photos and chose the ones I wanted to use, edited them in Photoshop, then copied the edited images into the Dropbox folder on my desktop computer. I’ve got the Dropbox app on my phone, so all I had to do was open that and save the photos I had added to my account right to my phone. Then I was free to play with them in the Project Life App. I sat down for a couple hours one afternoon and whipped out 6 pages. The most timely part was editing the photos. The app does have built in photo editing as well, so I probably could have skipped that step and saved myself some time, and I just might do that next time.

All of these layouts are from the first year (2005) that Jen and I took a trip north. We didn’t actually camp that year. We stayed in St. Ignace, MI and took a little day trip north to check out some of the sights on the east side of the U.P. The Upper Peninsula is so beautiful and peaceful. We have gone back many times in the past ten years of our camping trips.

So, here are the pages. If you have yet to try the Project Life App, jump on over and get it now. It’s SO EASY and FAST! You won’t regret it. And you can even have your layouts printed right from the app now. I haven’t tried that option yet, but I know I will. Maybe when I finish all the layouts from the camping trips. ;)

March Project Life® Blog Hop

Welcome to the third of 12 BLOG HOPS from the 2014 Becky Higgins Project Life® Creative Team! We are all passionate about Project Life & memory keeping and we wanted to continue to inspire each other and you as we move forward in 2015.

This past month was pretty busy around here and, while I hoped to squeeze in more time for my Project Life, it didn’t happen. That’s just how it goes sometimes. I was in the midst of finishing the final edit on my soon-to-be-released second novel, Goodbye, Magnolia. I’m SO EXCITED about this book. I’m absolutely giddy! And I spent some time putting together info for a LAUNCH TEAM that will help me to promote the book when it releases in a couple months. Want to help? CLICK HERE.

I also had a great big BLOGIVERSARY to celebrate TEN YEARS of writing on this blog! That took up a ton of time for two weeks out of the month and was a lot of fun. :)

But I did get one little layout done for the month of January. :) The warm tones of the table, the K-cup, the small restaurant photo, and the flowers on the book cover all made me lean toward yellow for this layout. And I liked that the Stampin’ Up Love Story cards are all neutral black and whites and greys, so I chose some black and white cards for the journaling. The black painted lines go well with the handwritten title on the Dear Mr. Knightley book, too. All the cards I used this time were actually from Stampin’ Up kits (see the list at the bottom of this post). I love those kits. :)

February Project Life® BLOG HOP

Welcome to the second of 12 BLOG HOPS from the 2014 Becky Higgins Project Life® Creative Team! We are all passionate about Project Life & memory keeping and we wanted to continue to inspire each other and you as we move forward in 2015.

This month, Jess asked us girls, “What supplies, techniques and equipment are you loving in your Project Life album right now?”

• PRE-DESIGNING in PHOTOSHOP – It’s been all digital for me lately. I use Photoshop to plan out my pages and save all my photos and cards in a folder on my desktop to be printed later. It helps so much to choose the photos for the week, lay them out in the Design A Pocket Page Template (FREE in the Project Life digital shop, by the way), then pick the cards to match.

• PROJECT LIFE DIGITAL KITS – Obviously. I’m all about the Project Life kits. This month, I used cards from the Kiwi, Sunshine, Midnight, Cherry (FREE HERE), Aqua, Cobalt and Honey kits. I seriously spent hours going through all the digital cards I’ve collected and mixing and matching ones that went with these two layouts. Spent way more time than I usually do on layouts, but it’s been a while since I really looked through all the kits, so that was the fun part. So many great card designs, which totally inspired me to create some of MY OWN.

• PROJECT LIFE CORNER ROUNDER – I couldn’t live without this Corner Rounder. When I print cards from the digital kits, I like to round the corners just like the cards that come in the physical kits. I tend to keep all the corners of my photos square, though.

Well, as you can see below, I decided not to type out any journaling this time around. Last month, I did it digitally just to see how it would fit and come up with what I wanted to say ahead of time. This month, not so much. Once I get the cards and photos printed in a month or two, then I will sit down and do all the journaling in my own handwriting. I like the clean look of typed fonts, but I’m a fan of writing things out as well. Seeing the handwriting of the people I love always makes me feel very connected to them so I always want to use lots of hand written journaling on my pages.

On to the layouts:

JANUARY 5-11, 2015 • A quiet week. Getting into the groove of the new year. Stuck home because of snow days. Didn’t take a ton of photos, hence my first try at a 6×8 broken up. I like it. It looks a little crooked in this digital version (oops! didn’t notice that when I saved it), but when I get the actual photo and cut it up, it will be lined up right. ;)

JANUARY 12-18, 2015 • Back to school after the very long snowy weekend. Chloe’s BFF came home with us on Wednesday to go to youth group with Chloe. Love that. Had a gymnastics meet on Saturday, then movie day at my parents’ farm on Sunday. A good week. Had to use that “balancing act” card as soon as I saw it. Went perfectly with Chloe on the balance beam. ;)

prepping and editing

Yesterday, we had SNOW DAY #7. It was actually an ice day. Freezing rain covered everything in the morning. Our driveway is like an ice rink right now. It’s ridiculous. It snows, then melts, then freezes, then repeats the cycle. We look crazy walking to our cars and trying to step only in the spots with crunchy snow because under the light feathery stuff, it’s a sheet of ice.

All of us were home for the day. Even Jake chose not to risk the roads and worked from home. It’s so nice that he can do that when needed. Most of the ice on the roads was melted by late morning, so we were able to get out.

I spent a good chunk of the afternoon sorting through photos from the past few weeks, choosing the ones I wanted to use for my Project Life album, editing, resizing, laying them out in Photoshop, then browsing through my digital kits to see which cards looked best with the colors in my photos. A few I chose for Week 2 are in the collage above. I will be sharing more pages in a little over a week for our next Project Life® Blog Hop.

IN WRITING NEWS …

I am getting into a serious groove editing Goodbye, Magnolia. My goal is to finish the big edits by the end of February (maybe sooner if I can keep it up!) and share it with my family and some friends for their input before I do more edits. Still no concrete release date yet. If you want to be the first to hear about the book release, SIGN UP for my NEWSLETTER! :)

Also, over on my Facebook author page, I will be sharing photos of some of the locations in the book in the weeks to come. I already shared one – the location of the final BIG WEDDING. If you aren’t following me there yet, hop on over and click “LIKE” to get all my posts in your news feed.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! May you take time to be with your loved ones, really be with them, not just on your electronic devices the whole time. I’m going to try to take my own advice as well. ;)

January Project Life® Blog Hop

Welcome to the first of 12 BLOG HOPS from the 2014 Becky Higgins Project Life® Creative Team! We are all passionate about Project Life & memory keeping and we wanted to continue to inspire each other and you as we move forward in 2015.

The wonderful Jess Forster, who took it upon herself to set this whole thing up, asked us girls the other day what we plan to do differently with our Project Life this year and what we’re going to keep the same.

What do I want to keep the same with my Project Life album this year?
A couple things. I want to keep documenting our year in a weekly format. I’m a lover of keeping our stories chronological, so I’m sticking with what I know and love.

Also, even though there are a zillion different pocket page designs available now, I am still in love with the original Design A format and will continue to use that style for the weekly layouts.

What do I want to change about my Project Life album this year?

TELL MORE STORIES
Along with the weekly layouts that tell the basics of what happened each week, I’d also like to do more “day in the life” or “week in the life” spreads that tell more about our days and the little stories along the way. I know that one day we’ll look back through all these albums and love seeing what we did every week, but there is more to the story than gymnastics practices, birthday parties, camping trips, etc. I want to dig a little deeper with my journaling.

USE MY BIG CAMERA MORE
I love my iPhone and the ease it brings me, but I miss the quality of the photos I get with my DSLR. So, I want to challenge myself to carry it around with me more often, to keep it on the dining room table where I can grab it when I need it, to play with different lenses more often. I tend to stick with my 50mm most of the time.

KEEP UP
I really want to keep up with my album better than I did last year. I didn’t get very far into the year when I got sidetracked catching up on some previous years’ layouts. Not that that’s a bad thing. Pictures were being printed and weeks were being documented, they were just from a year or two back.

This year, I’d like to stay a little more up to date. I’m not making any grand resolutions that I will do layouts every week because I know myself and what I’ve got on my plate right now and it’s just not realistic, but I hope to at least plan out my pages digitally once or twice a month, choose the photos, and prepare them for printing. Then every couple months, I’ll have all the photos printed and fill in the journaling.

I just placed a big photo order this week, so the prints for the layout I’m sharing today aren’t here yet. I whipped up the digital version in Photoshop to share here, but these first pages of my 2015 album will be actual cards and photos and handwritten journaling.

On to my first layout of the year!

JANUARY 1-4, 2015 • Week One of 2015. First four days of the year were spent at Jake’s sister’s house for New Years Eve and for our family Christmas. It was a nice relaxing start to the year and special time spent with family.

Project Life® Creative Team 2014!

I really wanted to get the prints made for this for my last Creative Team submission, a little layout in honor of this year’s team, but I didn’t get it done in time. So, I whipped up a little digital layout instead. Enjoy!

Here is the LEFT side.

It’s been an awesome year! Thanks again, Becky and Kari, and my wonderful Creative Team girls!

Project Life® December layouts

Well, it’s time to share my final Project Life pages of the year as a member of the 2014 Creative Team. So bittersweet. I will still be sharing layouts here on the blog going forward. In fact, several of us from this year’s team will be sharing each month and linking to each other’s blogs. A fun little blog hop!

Here are this month’s layouts. All are from the fall of 2012. I realized while looking back through my albums with Chloe recently that I have pictures for the end of that year, but I still had not finished journaling. So I chose a few weeks and finished them up.

All layouts use Design A pocket pages and the JADE Core Kit.

Enjoy!

October 8 – 14, 2012 • This week we worked on painting the house, finished running Couch to 5K, painted Chloe’s room, and ended the week with a fun family pumpkin carving party at Jake’s sister Brenda’s house. Good times!

October 22-29, 2012 • This was a week full of home improvements. Painting the garage, cleaning the house to start painting, putting new roofing on the roof above our kitchen. It was also the week of Hurricane Sandy. I had printed a couple of pictures of NYC I saw online and used them for this layout. The high waters and NYC without power.

November 12-18, 2012 • Had the first snowfall of the year, our annual family photo session with Heidi and family, some Christmas shopping, movie watching, and the Santa Parade in downtown G.R.

I have one more Project Life layout to share for the year. Check back soon. It’s a special one. :)

hello, monday

Last week was so crazy with all the snow days. Today, it’s raining and 50 degrees. All the snow? Gone. I wish it would stay this way. Sigh.

How was your weekend? We woke before dawn on Saturday to travel an hour to Chloe’s first gymnastics meet of the season. It was her first USA Gymnastics meet, where she was given actual scores. She did really well. She got 1st place on beam, 3rd on floor, 4th on bars and 5th overall. Pretty good for her first meet. I’m a very proud mama. When I get the pictures loaded off my big camera, I will share some.

I’ll also share some from our niece Violet’s 2nd birthday party. I was so tired from getting up at 5 a.m. so I was a bit of a zombie, but I did take quite a few pictures. It was a good time with family, celebrating this sweet girl who brings so much joy to all of us. Such a cutie pie.

This morning, I thought I would get to catch up on a little sleep, but a text from Jake woke me up. He was stranded at the high school. His clutch was sticking and so he could not get it into gear. We had to pay to have it towed to our house ($$$) and then I had to take him to work. We’ve lived as a one-vehicle family before and it’s not fun. This kind of stuff always seems to happen at the worst time. Praying that it’s not an expensive fix or we will have to decide between fixing the vehicle or buying Christmas gifts for our kids. Ugh! :(

On a happy note, when we arrived home from Heather and Jeff’s yesterday, I found a sweet gift in the mail from Becky Higgins, this pretty Lisa Leonard necklace that says “I am Project Life”. Totally made me smile from ear to ear. These necklaces are available for sale in Becky’s shop and I believe there is a limited quantity. You can get one HERE!

week in the life | wednesday

Planned out another layout from Week in the Life digitally and edited/sized photos to be printed. I’ve got a few other projects going on all at once right now, so it’s one step at a time with my Project Life. Designing one layout for my Week in the Life about once a week is working for me. When I get all the photos ready for all seven days, then I will order prints and finish the layouts with my handwritten journaling.

This day in photos:

• Me making my morning coffee (used the timer on my iPhone camera)
• The thermostat reading 62 degrees in our house. Brrrrr. Cold days.
• All the leaves that had fallen from our big trees.
• My notebook, which I fill with ideas and thoughts and to do lists.
• McDs hamburger and small Coke for lunch this day.
• Chloe’s BFF rides the bus and we always end up behind her bus on our drive home.
• Zach working on his homework while I played a little Bubble Witch 2 and watched Dr. Oz and Ellen.
• Dropped the kids off at youth group.
• Got myself a coffee at Biggby.
• Sat at the park and listened to Elise’s recent podcast while waiting to pick up the kids.
• Snagged the picture of Chloe in the red puffy outfit from the youth group’s Facebook page. It was a game they played that night. Crazies! :)

As with my other Week in the Life layouts, I am using the Amy Tangerine Plus One Mini Kit (printing these from the digital kit) and Design A pocket pages.

A YEAR AGO YESTERDAY, I received this email from Becky welcoming me to the Project Life Creative Team for 2014. It came at the perfect time when I really needed something to life my spirits and that it did. I wanted to shout from the rooftops and share the news with everyone as soon as I heard. And it was so hard to keep the news under wraps for a couple weeks until the big announcement was made public.

I feel very blessed to have been a member of this team of wonderful girls that I’ve had the privilege of sharing alongside throughout this year. It has flown by. Really, I remember thinking how long a year was and how many pages I was going to crank out. Of course, I wish I’d had more time and gotten many more layouts in the album this year, but I’m proud of the ones I’ve finished and shared here. And I will continue to share here, just as I did before I was a member of the team. :)

Very soon, a new group of wonderful Project Lifers will be receiving a similar email and will feel the same excitement that I felt. I’m so looking forward to following along with them and all that they share in 2015!
